Cash Money operates ~150 storefronts across Canada offering payday loans, installment loans, and cheque cashing. Owned by US-based CURO Group (which also owns Money Mart). Effective APR on payday loans: 365-548% depending on province. Installment loan APR: 47-59%. Almost any alternative is cheaper.
Cash Money payday loans are the most expensive form of consumer credit legal in Canada. A $500 payday loan in Ontario costs $70 in fees for a 14-day term. If you can't repay (most people can't), the rollover or new-loan trap typically costs $1,500+ over 6 months for a $500 borrowed. There are almost always better options.
12-18% APR. Try Meridian, Vancity, etc.
$79/mo × 12 builds credit + you get $1K back
Borrow + repay with no interest. Awkward but cheap.
Even at 24% APR, vastly cheaper than 365%
Most HR departments will advance 1-2 paychecks interest-free
34.86% APR · still much cheaper than payday
We give Cash Money 3/10 not because they're running an illegal operation — they're fully provincially regulated — but because their product is mathematically destructive for most borrowers. If you find yourself walking into a Cash Money location, please call a credit counsellor first (Credit Counselling Canada: 1-866-398-5999).
